Red Shift: Anders Johansson (CD, 66:36); HECD-016, 1997 Heptagon Records AB Box 20072 SE-200 74 MALMO SWEDEN Phone: + 46-40-919644 Fax: + 46-40-161325 Email: Bengt FedermannCyberhome: http://www.heptagon.se This release is a percussionist's soul and passion for all the world's rhythms and its synergistic heartbeat. Fourteen tracks transport you through Turkey, Afghanistan, Polynesia, Bali, Nigeria, India, North Africa, Azerbajdzjani, Burma, China, Syria and the exotic, hyper technical "Blues for FZ, [Frank Zappa]" universe. Jonas Hellborg, bassist extraordinaire, of a latent, short-lived version of The Mahavishnu Orchestra, guests on four tracks. He excels as is expected in his atmospheric presentations. Track one, "Blue Shift" is probably the most accessible piece to jazz fusion experimentation tastes with Hellborg. The remaining tracks are suggested for ethnic/tribal/world music/free jazz percussion completists. Ginger Baker probably has a copy of this. I dunno.Threads of new age and ambient/minimalist moments are sprinkled throughout as on "Imaginative ocean", "Nigerian oasis", "After the storm" and "Elif air ab tizak". Pieces range from 3:32 to 5:49 in length. Decades ago I used to check out albums from the public library on the Nonesuch label to sample the world of music. I wanted to broaden my horizons in my guitar playing. I would come across truly bizzare sounds considered as music. Well, Anders actually went to many of those places recording sounds, playing with these foreign musicians and bringing it all back for studio manipulation and overdubs. It is percussion eclectica, exotica covering the globe. This CD isn't gonna appeal to the masses. Audiophiles out there who consider yourselves broad in experimental tastes and appreciative of such honest, well-honed endeavors, need to try Anders Johansson. It is amazing that he pulled all this diversity off when most drummers are satisfied with getting that sporadic solo on a live recording. Never mind his having played for years with Yngwie Malmsteen, or keeping up with speed-guitarists Allan Holdsworth, Shawn Lane, and Mike Stern. This CD is Anders dedicating his heart, hands, and feet to an ageless beat. Take a stroll across the world with Red Shift. -- John W. Patterson For more of Anders' music and purchase info go here:
