V.A.: A Groove Selection (CD, 77:40); Groove Unlimited, GR-900, 2000 E-mail: sales@groove.nl Cyberhome: www.groove.nl 10 words or less: Ambient / New Age / Electronica sampler Elaboration: The first artist on this sampler is Ron Boots. His track is reminiscent of Tangerine Dream's later period work. Nice, mellow, Trance / electronica. Track 2 is by Future World Orchestra. New Age with a synthesized beat. Sort of reminds me of some of Rick Wakeman's early 90s work. Track 3 by Eric van der Heijden is a nice New Age piece. Track 4 by Hemisphere is more engaging. Building slowly over polyrhythmic percussion into a Trance beat reminiscent of Ozric Tentacles mello side sans Guitar; this I could recommend. Track 5 by Frank Van Bogaert is on the orchestral side of the New Age spectrum. I am reminded of something by Mike Oldfield perhaps on Songs of Distant Earth sans Guitar. Inspiring piece; recommended. Track 6 by Syndrone is an ambient excursion, good for relaxing and falling asleep. Track 7 by Wavestar is electronica with a New Age sweetness to it; very nice. Track 8 by Steve Roach & Vidna Obmana is ambient with a slow building percussion background; music to dream to. Track 9 by Rudy Adrian is sequenced ambient electronica similar to Richard Pinhas' mellow work. Track 10 by Intelligentsia is an okay techno / Trance / New Wave sounding piece. Track 11 by Kees Aerts is okay sequenced New Age. Track 12 by Michael Stearns is an ambient excursion, good for relaxing and falling asleep. Track 13 by Victor Cerullo is an interesting rhythmic Trance / New Age mix akin to Ozric Tentacles crossed with Fonya; effective. Track 14 by John Dyson is a nice New Age piece with well programmed Drums. Track 15 by Kees Aerts & James Clent is a very good sequenced electronica piece with guitar that builds to a crescendo. Track 16 by Ron Boots, Ian Boddy & Harold van der Heijden is an ambient / Trance mix that has a nice flow. Track 17 by Alpha Wave Movement is a pulsing ambient piece. Music to dream to. The final track on this sampler is by The Blue Team. An ambient piece that includes spoken word vocals through a Vocoder. With a name like Groove Unlimited, I expected this record company to be focused on Trance artists but it seems to encompass a larger variety of E-music. I thoroughly enjoyed a few of the pieces on this sampler and based on those samples I feel confident recommending the ones I did, YMMV. ~ L. Perez
