Cryptomnesia, Hypnerotomachia Cryptomnesia appear to be an electronica / techno outfit with an occasionally socially-conscious bent (I did a search for them on the Internet and found one site describing them as metal, which they sure aren't on this release). Their music is heavily based around electronic drum loops, synth loops, and narrative and sung vocalizations. While their music isn't outright terrible, it never really seemed to take ahold of me. Perhaps one simple reason is the sound quality. The album is labeled "Promotional Limited Edition," so maybe I shouldn't complain, but the mix is so consistently muddy and sonically impenetrable that I continually feel like I'm missing out on important parts of the music. Maybe if I could hear more of the subtleties I believe are there, the album would become easier to listen to (by the way, the cover art is horrendous and needs some improvement as well, while they're at it). The other deciding factor in my dislike of the album came from the compositions themselves, which seem to be often directionless and ineffective. Most of the loops, synth sounds, etc. seemed pretty cookie-cutter or perhaps just barely a notch above. Nothing really stuck with me after I quit listening to the disc. Perhaps more detail in the mix could convince me to re-evaluate my opinion, but for now I'd say proceed with caution. ~Jon Dharma Murphree~
