Richard Garrett: Robot Sculpture

Richard Garrett has composed a collection of tracks on Robot Sculpture
that is primarily electronic music that is easily performed,
because it is generated with software! However, though the
generative, electronic music is the base of the effort, there is other
instrumentation that accompanies the generated music.

Robot Sculpture can be characterized as having a sci-fi flavor to it and
I wouldn't be surprised if one of these tracks were used in a sci-fi
movie soundtrack or as background music in some program on the sci-
fi cable channel. The composition has a 20th century, outside feel, as
it explores some unusual harmonies, as well as incorporating an
unusual mix of instrumentation. The use of percussion instruments is
definitely interesting in that the rhythms and timings involved are
very creative, different, and sporadic at times. The composition is a
little reminiscent to me of the soundtrack to the original Planet Of The
Apes movie, but I wouldn't say it sounds just like that at all. The
strictly instrumental compositions are diverse in content, though
there is a definite style, feel, and character that is like a thread woven
through all of them.

Summarizing my take on Robot Sculpture, I would say that Richard
Garret definitely has a grasp on 20th century, modern composition
and the computer-generated genre of music. He also has some tact in
his accompaniment of this computer-generated music with real
instrumentation. But, though the tonality explored in Robot Sculpture
is interesting, this probably is not the type of music that I would sit
around listening to if I ever had some free time to do that. However,
Robot Sculpture does contain some tracks that are probably pretty
suitable for sci-fi movie soundtracks or sci-fi program background
music.
